Hiiii world,

What I’m Reading
So last month I talked about RADIUM GIRLS, a nonfic, which is pretty different from what I usually read. I, um, still haven’t finished this book, since it convinced me I had radium poisoning and also was just generally a very visceral and intense read. I have about 100 pages left, and I just need to power through. I will! I will prevail!

Anyway, as to what I’m actually reading right now, that would be Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy. I’m kind of sticking with nonfic right now. I’ve been having a hard time getting into books lately. I quit two romance novels, a highly anticipated YA fantasy, and probably some other stuff I’m forgetting. But the nonfic has been holding me. Been stimulating my mind? 😉

Some of the scholarship referenced and cited in Buzz is stuff I read in one of my classes (The History of US Sexuality)–shout-out to Andrea Tone and Devices & Desires: A History of Contraceptives in America (read it!)–so it’s been really cool to be like, “Oh, yeah, I know what that thing is.” Partly I like it cause it makes me feel smart, ha, but it’s also not dense and has a fun voice. I don’t think you have to be a history fan to dig into this one, so don’t discount it if you’re a non-non-fic reader like moi.

I always use this section to talk about stuff I’ve recently read too. Soooo…

Look out for this one in March. It’s been a book of my heart for so long, and now you can all finally read it!

Side note: I reread Simon VS after seeing the movie. It’s now the 3rd time I’ve read it, and it remains the most delightful book. I can’t wait to go see the movie when it’s out–also in March! So many good things are coming out soon 😀

What I’m Doing
ALL MY DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE. I finally got to go to…

I can’t believe this actually happened. I’ve been waiting for this for years. It was absolutely magical. MAGICAL.

Also 54 Below makes amazing Brussel sprouts.

Mmmm and some other less exciting but still noteworthy things, I saw Black Panther today. It was such a visually stunning film, and also full of great characters. I know the whole universe is already going to see it, but if you haven’t yet make sure you do! No spoilers here from me but eeeeeeeepppp!!!

Also the Super Bowl happened earlier this month! I made Jess come over and watch it with me. I explained football to her, and she got pretty into it 😀 Or she just enjoyed my mom and me’s commentary bashing the Patriots the entire time.

Here is Jess imitating the black paint football players have on their cheeks, ha.

Alas, I don’t have pictures, but yesterday I was at NYPL for their Asian American YA panel! That was super relatable and interesting and when Rhoda talked about the Philippines being shaped by colonization/war and the role of superstition that’s still present in her life and shapes it, it was so gratifying to hear a little bit of your experience being shared.

Mith and I hung out after and I tried a variety of vegetable dim sum before we returned to our usual haunt, B&N. 🙂

I shall end this section of ramblings of social interactions with a duct tape Mushu I made at work.

What I’m Thinking About
Mmm stuff? I’m so proud and awed by the Parkland survivors speaking out for gun control so passionately. They are the embodiment of YA, and it warms my heart. But I hate they have to fight for this. I hate the GOP refuses to act. I hate the GOP refuses to save lives.

In other news, Virtue and Moir can’t just be platonic, right???? RIGHT???

What I’m Netflixing Listening To
Usually when I do this section I talk about music. And I do have a new band to talk about–We Are Scientists.

But I actually want to talk about a podcast I started listening to called More Perfect. It’s definitely been sucking up time. It’s all about constitutional law and Supreme Court cases. You can see I’ve been surrounding myself with nonfic/historical things. But listen to it!! 😀

What I’m Writing
Still revising monsterbook. Idk if it’ll ever be done.

Fingers crossed I keep this blogging this up!! Take care, stay safe, and be kind to each other ❤

With love,

Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

Wow, wow! It’s nearly the end of June which means we’re halfway through the year–this is madness!

So last year I did a post like this, but I came up with my own questions and categories. Today, I watched Piera’s video, and thought it would be fun to do this tag instead of doing another post on my own. The Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag was created by ReadLikeWildfire and Earl Grey Books, and I’ve linked both their original videos here!  And though it is hard, I’m gonna try REALLY hard to stick to one book per answer 🙂

Best Book Read in 2017 So Far
Hmm… probably STRANGE THE DREAMER by Laini Taylor. The writing was just so beautiful and magical. And the story was just as good. Romantic, heartbreaking, brutal. I adored the characters and was so sucked into this world and the story. It was amazing.

Best Sequel You Read in 2017
Looking through my Goodreads, I haven’t read a lot of sequels this year! I read a fair bunch of trilogy enders, but not book twos. But from the few I did read, one totally stands out to me: A CROWN OF WISHES by Roshani Chokshi. I’m in love with this book! The writing was gorgeous and Gauri and Vikram are my babies! The story was so good and addicting. I’d love a movie, just to see this lush world brought to life.

Book You Are Excited to Read in 2017 But Haven’t Yet
This one is on the library, not me. I’ve had I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE, AND WE’RE OFF, and OUR DARK DUET on hold for ages, and the library still does not have its copies. Why must you do this to me D: I also want to really read Cindy Pon’s WANT, but that one isn’t even in the catalogue yet. There is one that is on me, though. I got ROAR in my most recent Fairyloot, and just haven’t had the time to read it yet. Woops.

Most Anticipated Books for the Second Half of 2017
RENEGADES by Marissa Meyer.
Yeah, I broke my rule. Tough.

Biggest Disappointment
I respectfully decline to answer, but they made me sad.

Book You Were Surprised How Much You Liked It
Most recently it was GIRLS MADE OF SNOW AND GLASS. I’m not a Snow White fan and I wasn’t sure what a queer feminist Snow White retelling would look like. But it was INCREDIBLE. Seriously. I was hooked from the first line. It was so good and amazing and complete perfection.

awkward 2 (but it’s all TRUE!! <3)

New Favorite Author
Hmmm… perhaps Melissa Bashardoust, who wrote GIRLS MADE OF SNOW AND GLASS, ha. But I did really want to have different answers to each question or else it’ll be boring. *thinks* Okay I’m gonna change my previous answer…

i do what i want

Book You Were Surprised How Much You Liked It
SONG OF THE CURRENT, DONE DIRT CHEAP, or THE GLASS SPARE. Woops, so much for only picking one. But I want to shout about all these books and I don’t think I’ll have the opportunity to based on the remaining questions. Each of these books surprised me, cause I hoped I would like them, but I really wasn’t expecting much from them (except Song of the Current, really).

The Glass Spare was unputdownable from the beginning, and the characters were so good and the conflicts and romance and GAH MY HEART. Then Done Dirt Cheap totally snuck up on and I had to keep reading until I reached the end. And Song of the Current is the watery book of my heart! The world building was so fresh and Caro is amazing, and it was so empowering and awesome. Also A+ romance 🙂

OKAY GOOD. I have righted the order of things by breaking all my rules.

i'm awesome

New Fictional Crush
Thomas Cresswell. He’s not new since I met him last year in STALKING JACK THE RIPPER, but I appreciated him so much more in HUNTING PRINCE DRACULA. Like to the point where I was like, “If you won’t take him Audrey Rose, I WILL.”

But NEW, NEW, as in only discovered this year 😉 is Porter from ALEX, APPROXIMATELY. Porter is… Porter. *dreamy sigh*

let me love you4

Some New Favorite Characters
Everyone already mentioned above for sure, and also the gang from THE HATE U GIVE. They were phenomenal. The voice in that book is overflowing. They were each so beautifully drawn and compelling.

my-babies belle ouat

Book That Made You Cry
Oh, just a tiny book called A COURT OF WINGS AND RUIN. Full on sobbed.

Honorable mention: THE NAMES THEY GAVE US by Emery Lord.

Book That Made You Happy
I mean, also ACOWAR, but we’re being different (esp since I just broke the rules AGAIN) SOOOO… THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED. So precious. The most precious. Precious, precious, precious.

Book to Film Adaptation You Liked So Far
Uhhh… I haven’t seen any… I don’t think…

Fave Review You’ve Done
I don’t blog anymore, so I can’t answer this </3

Most Beautiful Book You Have
Okay, this probably has to be STRANGE THE DREAMER because the UK edition is a treasure. The blue stained pages, the cover! I don’t know if anything will top it.

Books You Need to Read By The End of 2017
So everything I listed above in the anticipating and haven’t read yet sections, plus DARE MIGHTY THINGS, UNEARTHED, THE BELLES (I’ve got an e-arc :D), AN ENCHANTMENT OF RAVENS, INVICTUS, probably some stuff I haven’t heard of yet… 😀

And there we are! The Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag! I can’t end this better cause I have to jet to work. BYE

What I’m Reading
So I just read A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury and it’s fine. It’s all fine. I’ll be fine. Totally fine.

I’m just gonna lay here on the floor until 2017.

i'm fine friends

Basically what I knew going into this book:
hp suffer but happy

And now I’m done and I don’t know what to do and what even was this perfect perfect book of wonder and pain and awesomeness? 1. It was feminist af. 2. It was dark and hard and complicated. 3. It was heartbreaking and gut stopping and filled with love and life and friendship. 4. It was filled with swoon I can’t even process.

I’m gonna try to sum up my overwhelming feels with some gifs.

Okay so this GIF is basically Tamlin the entire book fight me on this:
i'm in a rage 2

And this was Rhys and his crew who are actual #SquadGoals:
that's my mate ouat

That’s also coincidentally the image in my head when Lucien went “You’re my mate.”

Speaking of Lucien, this was my relationship to him the entire book:
expected more from you

This book in general:

Me anytime Rhys and Feyre were together:
just kiss

Me anytime Cassian and Nesta were together:
that's my ship

Feyre when dealing with dumb dumbs:
punch you in the face ouat

Feyre to Tamlin (the biggest dumb dumb):

Everyone to Tamlin:
what are you doing sassy gay 2

Tamlin to Tamlin:
parks staying angry relaxes me

RHYS AND FEYRE OTP FOR LIFE WHAT EVEN IS AIR IN OTHER NEWS FIRE IS HOT AND STARS AND PAINT AND HALP there you are. i’ve been looking for you what’s that oh it’s just me dying forever I want you to know that I am broken and healing, but every piece of my heart belongs to you seriously i’m fine why do you ask Because you were breaking. And I couldn’t find another way to save you nope no I’m not byeeee:

read the book

It’s so awesome, you will die.

What I’m Doing
Languishing in my book hangover. I’m not a functional human being. Also, I’m coveting this:

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 12.01.49 AM

Okay, no, I have done some things.

I saw Ghostbusters yesterday, and it was SO good. Really fun, really well written, and just a marvelously ‘feel-good’ film. Much recommend. I’d recommend it with the same vigor I’m recommending those Maas books above. Coincidentally, I watched the movie while in the middle of reading…

It was totally worth it. I was high on amazing storytelling already, so the film had a lot to compete with, but it was really good. It had 4 amazing female characters at its core, Chris Hemsworth being ridiculous and dancing, and captured the feel of New York.

I also did 2 Pitch Wars critique giveaways! One was 5 query critiques, but I ended up doing 7. Then I also did 5 query and first 5 pages critiques. I posted a few writing tips on Twitter after the fact, so those are there for any writers that may be following me. I’m doing one last PW giveaway with my friend Michelle Tran that’s running until Wednesday, so get involved while you can (info all on Twitter).

I really wanted to do these giveaways because Pitch Wars helped me so much last year. It’s a big part of why I’m agented now. + the community around Pitch Wars is so phenomenal and supportive. I was also feeling a little weird about a whole new class of mentees being chosen this year and the whole process starting over without me. Maybe part of me felt like I was being left behind while new writers filled our shoes. But doing these giveaways helped me get over that and connect with prospective mentees. I found my new place in the community. Good luck to everyone entering Pitch Wars–it really is a magical experience. 🙂

What I’m Thinking About
Look I’m just a pile of feels right now and I can’t process anything other than how perfect A Court of Mist and Fury was. It did so many things.

It didn’t romanticize abusive, controlling, overprotective behavior.

It showed that relationships are built on more than just sex. It showed that your first love isn’t always your true love. And that people can change and who you were once were, or what you once needed, isn’t what you’ll always need.

It didn’t vilify ambition. Too often we swoon over a man in a position of authority he doesn’t want, feels trapped in. But here we had Rhys who loved his power, had a vision for his land and people, and was working hard to create a better world.

Rhys was never just one thing. He was sad and broken and angry. He was loving and kind and fierce. He was gentle. He was brave and scared. He saved others, but was also in need of saving (mentally and physically). He brooded and lived and fought. He was shrewd and calculating, and apologetic and naive. On the same note, literally everyone was full of different sides, and grew and developed and stomped on my heart.

We had sisters. I can’t get over Feyre, Nesta, and Elain, and I never will.

It explored trauma with all its hard, dark places. I loved how Tamlin and Feyre dealt with their trauma differently. The same experiences are never the same for different people. Feyre’s nightmares and guilt, her flashbacks and slow and quiet withering away were artfully done. Tamlin was agitated, aggressive, closed off, and controlling.

The way Feyre gradually comes back to painting, to her creative outlet, was beautiful.

Rhys’ feminism was everything. He saw Feyre has his equal, treated her as his equal, put her first, wanted her to embrace her power and control her own fate. He treated the women around him with nothing but respect and saw their worth, giving them high ranks befitting them.

Feyre’s arc was never about Rhys. She didn’t grow because of him, or become stronger because of him. Their epic beautiful love story isn’t responsible for the epic beautiful lady Feyre became.

I can’t even with this book.

heart eyes motherfucker

What I’m Writing
Apparently love letters to this perfect book.

And I’m working on this fantasy idea, but slowly, letting the pieces come together in their own way. Brittany and I had a writing date at Breads last week where I brainstormed some stuff for it.

What I’m Watching
I showed my mom the 2006 mini series of Jane Eyre last week. I love that version so much. They capture the characters and essence of the book so well. But other than that I don’t think I’ve really been watching stuff… my mind has been preoccupied with books.

Oh, Jess did come over last week and we finally watching The Scorch Trials. I wasn’t really into it, but then THAT ENDING. Jess and I both had overwhelming feels. So, um, I guess I shall be watching The Death Cure (whenever that happens) (get well soon Dylan <3) (#SaveMinho2k16).

I want A Court of Pain and Feels movies.

That’s all from me for now. Be kind to each other,
Mic ❤
